Calibrated Chain

Calibrated chain is chain that is manufactured by a special process to ensure a correct match to the ‘gypsy’ on a windlass. The ‘Gypsy’ is the turning part on the windlass over which the calibrated chain passes, there are slots and grooves in the gypsy that allow the calibrated chain to fit into the gypsy similar to matching cogs. If the chain has not been calibrated it will not fit correctly into the gypsy slots and grooves causing it to slip, jam or jump thereby possibly damaging the gypsy and/or failure to winch in the chain
Calibrated chain is used on vessels from the largest container ships, with electric windlasses now being readily affordable some small craft are equipped with a windlass and calibrated chain as standard.
Boat Gear Direct stock Hot Dip Galvanised and Grade 316 SS Marine Grade 40 calibrated chain in the following sizes. It can be supplied in any length.

6mm Calibrated Chain – DIN 766
One option – The actual chain size is 6 x 18.5 x 20mm – Explanation- 6mm = Material Diameter 18x5mm = Inside Link Length 20mm = Outside Link Width.
7mm Calibrated Chain – DIN 766
One option – The actual chain size is 7 x 22 x 23mm – Explanation- 7mm = Material Diameter 22mm = Inside Link Length 23mm = Outside Link Width.
8mm Calibrated Chain – DIN 766
One option – The actual chain size is 8 x 24 x 24mm – Explanation- 8mm = Material Diameter 24mm = Inside Link Length 24mm = Outside Link Width.
10mm Calibrated Chain – DIN 799 or ISO – EN818-3
Two options –

  1. The actual chain size is 10 x 28 x 34mm – Explanation- 10mm = Material Diameter 28mm = Inside Link Length 34mm = Outside Link Width.
  2. The actual chain size is 10 x 30 x 35mm – Explanation- 10mm = Material Diameter 30mm = Inside Link Length 35mm = Outside Link Width.

The reason for two sizes can be traced back to the variation in metric and imperial measurement. The correct size will be dependent on the manufacturer of the windlass.

12mm Calibrated Chain – ISO – EN818-3
One option – The actual chain size is 12 x 36 x 40mm – Explanation- 12mm = Material Diameter 36mm = Inside Link Length 40mm = Outside Link Width.

13mm Calibrated Chain – DIN766
One option – The actual chain size is 13 x 36 x 44mm – Explanation- 13mm = Material Diameter 36mm = Inside Link Length 44mm = Outside Link Width.

14mm Calibrated Chain – ISO – EN818-3
One option – The actual chain size is 14 x 42 x 46mm – Explanation- 14mm = Material Diameter 42mm = Inside Link Length 46mm = Outside Link Width.
